Damaged hair, we all have been there. There goes another one. Another hair has fallen off. And… wait, was that a split end on there?

Weak hair is as fragile as glass. As dry as straw. And as annoying as a mosquito. Sometimes, dealing with it seems impossible. But, it can be done. With some tender loving care and patience, you can strengthen it up and turn that bunch of ragged straw into a glorious, luscious crown. Here's how:

 

  1. Do Damage Control

Weak hair needs tender loving care. That means that, for a while, you'll have to be extra gentle and avoid everything that can make it even weaker. Like perms, or even dying. It's best to avoid harsh treatments like those at this time. It's also a good idea to turn down the heat of your blow dryer and styling tools. If you can, use them less often, too.

Same for hair washing. No one's saying you have to go out with a head of dirty hair (ewww!) but if you can wash three rather than four times a week, do it. Your damaged hair will thank you. Oh, and be careful when brushing; don't just rip through your hair. Did you know that when testing hair products, the lab uses brushing to "damage" the hair. Yep, just an innocent little hair brush.  

 

  1. Moisturize

Like your skin, your hair needs moisture, too. Damaged hair has trouble holding on to moisture, and if it becomes too thirsty, it'll get all crispy and start breaking up and off in places. The solution? Hair oils.

Oils are amazing at moisturizing hair, as they create a protective barrier around each strand that keeps every precious drop of moisture in. Our favorite is Moroccan Organic Argan Oil. It moisturizes hair, tames frizz and flyaways and gives your locks a lustrous shine, too. Plus, it's super versatile, you can use it all over damp hair, apply a few drops to your dry ends to smooth out flyaways and even do a pre-shampoo treatment.  

 

  1. Get Regular Trims

I get it. Going to the hairdresser's every six weeks is a pain. And you're trying to grow your hair longer, anyway.

So, why cut it? Because it's the only way to prevent those split ends that have already invaded your hair from wreaking even more damage. They start at the ends, but travel up the hair shaft quickly causing breakage higher up. Trims will prevent new split ends in the first place, too. Plus, the longer you wait, the more of your hair the hairdresser will have to cut. Trust me, you wish you had gone earlier!  

 

  1. Do A Protein Treatment

Did you know that your hair is made up of around 90% keratin? Problem is, keratin is fragile. Heat, harsh weather and chemical treatments are just some of the things that can strip it off your hair, leaving it dry and damaged. That's why you need to make sure your hair always has all the keratin it needs.

  1. Eat healthy

Salmon, carrots and sardines are a source of biotin, a vitamin that strengthens weak hair and improves its texture. Don't forget rice, oats and cabbage. They're full of silica, a mineral that stimulates hair growth. And your leafy greens, of course. Those always help.  

 

With a little patience, the right haircare and a lot of TLC, weak and damaged hair will be a thing of the past for you, too.
