Babyface Blog Dehydrated Skin

Is your skin more sensitive than usual?

Have your fine lines become so deep, it looks like you’ve aged 5 years overnight?

Does your skin feel both oily and dry, like you have a layer of grease sitting on sandpaper?

If you’ve answered yes to even just one of these questions, chances are your skin is dehydrated.

Here’s how to tell for sure:

5 Signs Your Skin Is Dehydrated

1. Your Skin Looks Dull

When your skin’s dehydrated, its glow is the first thing to go.

Makes sense, the glow comes from hydration. When your body has all the moisture it needs, your skin reflects it. It takes on the dewy look Korean women are famous for.

Take the hydration away and skin literally loses its luster. Your skin looks dull and tired, like you haven’t had a good night’s sleep in ages - even if you did!

2. Your Skin Is Rough To The Touch

Did you know your skin exfoliates on its own? The more hydrated your skin is, the faster this natural exfoliation happens.

When your skin lacks moisture, it starts to slacken on the exfoliation job. Dead cells don’t slough off as quickly, making your skin rough and flaky. Ugh.

3. Your Skin Feels Tight

Dehydrated skin is uncomfortable. It suddenly starts to feeling tight during the day and after cleansing. Especially after cleansing.

The more dehydrated your skin is, the tighter it feels. If it’s severely dehydrated, it may even itch!

4. Your Skin Is More Sensitive

Perhaps the worst symptom of dehydrated skin is sensitivity. If your skin’s losing moisture, it means that its protective barrier is damaged.

A damaged protective barrier doesn’t just let moisture out. It also lets germs, pollutants and external irritants in. Cue irritation, redness and inflammation.

You may even experience a breakout. Acne is an inflammatory disease, remember? If dehydrated skin gets inflamed, a few pimples may rear up their ugly heads.

5. Your Fine Lines And Wrinkles Look Deeper

Moisture is a natural wrinkle filler. It plumps up your fine lines and wrinkles so they look smaller.

But as moisture starts to evaporate, the plumping effect vanishes. Now your wrinkles look way deeper than before. Help!

What’s The Difference Between Dry & Dehydrated Skin?

This all sounds a lot like dry skin, doesn’t it? Yet, there’s a clear difference:

Dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water. It’s a temporary condition that can affect anyone - yes, even oily skin - anytime.

If you treat it like dry skin, you’d just make things worse. So, what's a girl to do?

How Do You Fix Dehydrated Skin?

1. Add Back Moisture With A Hyaluronic Acid Serum

If your skin lacks moisture, the fix is easy: add moisture back in. That’s a job for hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet: it attracts water from the air and dumps it into the skin. It’s so powerful, it can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water!

That’s like giving your skin a waterfall of moisture! All that extra water plumps up your skin, makes it softer and gives it a radiant glow.

Our Hyaluronic Acid Serum contains pure hyaluronic acid and humectants to plump skin full of moisture. You can even use it with your favorite serums and moisturizers to give them a moisture boost.

2. Strengthen Your Skin’s Protective Barrier With Niacinamide

If moisture’s evaporating out of your skin, your skin’s protective barrier is damaged.

The fastest way to fix it is with oils - and if your skin’s dry AND dehydrated, that’ll work like a charm. But what if you’re oily and dehydrated? Adding more oil could lead to more pimples. Ugh.

Luckily, oils ain’t the only thing that can strengthen your skin’s protective barrier. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, is great at the job too.

Niacinamide works because it increases the levels of ceramides in your skin. Ceramides are the building blocks of your skin, part of the glue that holds your protective barrier together.

When you’re using niacinamide, you’re basically making new bricks to patch up the holes in your protective wall. It’s an easy fix that works for ALL skin types.

P.S. Niacinamide also fights wrinkles, brightens the skin tone and soothes irritation. You can find it in our Niacinamide Serum. It contains a whopping 6% of ceramides.

3. Hold Pause On Powerful Active Ingredients

Did you know that powerful active ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid and benzoyl peroxide can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier and lead to dehydration?

It usually happens when you’re too eager to see results fast. You go all in, using them too much too soon. But rather than flawless skin, you’re left with a rough and itchy complexion.

It’s a sign you need to cut back usage. Two or three times a week is enough. And make sure to use moisturizer afterwards.

Wrapping It Up

If your skin suddenly feels all tight and dry but your oil production levels haven’t changed, there’s a good chance your skin is dehydrated. Add back moisture, patch up the holes in your protective barrier and hold off potentially drying ingredients for a while. Then watch the moisture come back and your wrinkles get smaller again.
