Babyface's Pure Bearberry Extract is used for lightening age spots, freckles, sun spots, and for treating conditions such as Melasma and evening out blotchy skin tone for a more uniform, brighter complexion.
What is Bearberry Extract (Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi Leaf)?
Derived from the leaves of the Uva Ursi plant, bearberry extract is a botanical skin lightener, the active agent is arbutin. It works by reducing melanin production, the brown pigment in our skin. Bearberry is not hydroquinone (HQ), and it does not break down into HQ, but it is considered a hydroquinone derivative, so it works similar by inhibiting tyrosinase activity. It provides the same benefits, while skipping the hydroquinone safety concerns. Since neither bearberry nor arbutin break down into HQ, this is a great alternative to HQ.
How Does Bearberry Extract Work?
As with other skin lighteners, this blocks the formation of color pigments. By stopping the pigment from being produced, it eventually wears off. This extract is used for lightening age spots, freckles, sun spots, and for treating conditions such as Melasma and evening out blotchy skin tone for a more uniform, brighter complexion. It’s also packed with antioxidants and is said to have natural sun protective benefits for the skin.
Used alone, this extract can dramatically change the tone and color of the skin. Because of the powerful whitening effects, pure extract should be diluted so it has a more controlled, subtle effect on the skin. Using a stronger dose does not make it work any faster, but could cause uneven lightening. Used regularly, it can remove even the most stubborn pigmented areas of the skin. Bearberry also increases the cell turnover rate and because it is an excellent antioxidant, it works to fight free radicals that can cause additional skin conditions, such as skin cancer.
Intended for external use only – DO NOT EAT.
This is a full strength concentrate, so it is recommended that it be diluted to 25% or less to control the lightening effects. Commercial products that contain Bearberry for lightening are usually at concentrations of 5% or less. Using this extract undiluted could cause more lightening than desired, or uneven lightening. A stronger does does not make it work faster.
Apply twice daily for best results. To dilute, add contents of this bottle to at least 4 ounces of your favorite lotion, cream, serum or toner, and mix well. Alternatively, you can also mix just one dose at a time by dispensing some cream/lotion/water into your palm, then adding a few drops of the Bearberry extract; mix and apply.
